Media Anonymity and Privacy Policy of Alcoholics Anonymous

MESSAGE TO THE MEDIA.

A.A. appreciates the support received from the media and seeks continued cooperation in protecting the anonymity of our members at the public level. We ask that in presenting A.A. members you:

  • use first names only,
  • do not use pictures in which faces may be recognised.
Anonymity lies at the heart of our Fellowship and assures our members that their recovery will be private. Often, the active alcoholic will avoid any source of help which might reveal his or her identity.

Alcoholics Anonymous is not affiliated with any other organization, although many have adapted A.A's Twelve Steps for their own use. A.A. is self-supporting, declining outside contributions. We are non-professional, offering only the voluntary support of one alcoholic helping another.

Throughout the world, favourable media coverage has been one of the principal means of bringing alcoholics into our Fellowship. You have helped make this possible, and for that we thank you.

If you wish more information, you may contact NZ us by post or e-mail, either at the address above nzgso@xtra.co.nz

Payments to GSO

It would be a great help if all payments to the GSO showed:

  • whether it is for publications, mainstay or a donation
  • the specific name of the group (as on the website)
  • a contact name and phone number plus return address
It is time for a further order to be placed for new stocks of publications. As all publications are sold at near-to-cost, outstanding accounts are being chased up so that we have the cash to pay the overseas supplier.

Databases for NZ Schools and Medical Practitioners

Search instructions provided by Dr Geraldine King, Non- AA ManCom for National Conference Oct 05

Schools
minedu.govt.nz is the Ministry of Education website.
From the Home Page, on the right hand side there is a menu of choices:

  • click on the third listing down Directory of Educational Institutions
  • Click on Downloadable Spreadsheets and then click on School Directory to access a listing with addresses of every school in NZ in alphabetical order
Medical Practices
Primary Healthcare (General Practice) in NZ has changed over the past decade from practices owned and operated by often a solo GP who commonly was there for up to 30 or more years. Currently the system involves larger (multidisciplinary) healthcentres with doctors who may be employed on contracts and who are much more mobile. The administration of primary healthcare is by Primary Health Organisations who are funded by District Health Boards.

Although the NZ Medical Council holds a listing of all registered Medical Practitioners, not all of this information is available to the public at present. The Ministry of Health website however provides links to Primary Health Organisations and these websites / contact persons on email can thus provide listings of medical practices in that particular PHO.

moh.govt.nz has on the Home Page a list of Health Topics on the left of the screen.
  • Click on Primary Health Care and PHOs
  • On the left hand menu of this page go to Established PHOs and find listings according to region.
The local DHB link will not provide the direct information of the given practices in that PHO area. Go instead to the PHO website and follow links. E.g. Auckland Procare and an option Find a Dr in your suburb which lists names and practice addresses of all doctors in that suburb.

If a PHO has no website and the information is not obvious as to the participating practices, then email the PHO contact person who should supply this. Names and addresses of practices is public knowledge and will be updated regularly under the regulations of DHBs and Ministry of Health. A Practice manager likewise can supply on enquiry names of the current doctors working out of a given practice.
